Underground Mine Emergency Response Winners Announced

The Competition, hosted at the Northern Star Resources’ Kanowna Belle Gold Mine, saw twelve teams from across the Goldfields participate in scenarios designed to improve emergency response skills and knowledge.

Scenarios included incident management, theory, first aid, rope rescue, search and rescue, team skills, breathing apparatus skills and fire-fighting.

St Barbara Limited took out the overall honours for Best Team followed by runner up, Norton Gold Fields Ltd. In third place was Evolution Mining.

The other winners include:

  • Rope Rescue – AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd, Sunrise Dam Operations

  • Theory – AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd, Sunrise Dam Operations

  • First Aid – Gold Fields Australia Pty Ltd, Agnew Gold Mine

  • Team Skills – BHP Billiton Nickel West, Northern Operations

  • Overall First Aid – Norton Gold Fields Ltd

  • Overall BA Skills – Norton Gold Fields Ltd

  • Team Safety – AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd, Sunrise Dam Operations

  • Best New Captain – Rory McHarrie, Northern Star Resources, Kalgoorlie Operations

  • Incident Management Scenario – Stasi Capsanis, Northern Star Resources, Kalgoorlie Operations

  • Theory Individual – Helen Wood, AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd, Sunrise Dam Operations

  • Best New Team – Northern Star Resources, Kalgoorlie Operations

  • Best Captain – Wade Leeson, Gold Fields Australia Pty Ltd, St Ives Operations

CME chief executive Reg Howard-Smith said diversity featured strongly amongst the competing teams this year.

“It was great to see a number of mines field team members who had never participated in a competition before,” Mr Howard-Smith said.

“There is no better place to hone the skills required to support successful emergency response preparedness across the sector.

CME congratulates the competing teams, event managers and volunteers who all worked hard to produce a very successful event, and thanks Northern Star Resources Ltd for the use of the Kanowna Belle Gold Mine as the competition venue.
