Underground Mine Emergency Response Competition

Goldfields resource companies are converging on Kalgoorlie this weekend for the annual 2012 Underground Mine Emergency Response Competition.

The Competition, coordinated by the state’s peak resources representative body, The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME), provides an ideal opportunity for mining operations to compare and test their emergency response skills in a controlled environment.

Held over the weekend of 10-11 November 2012 at KCGM’s Mt Charlotte underground mine in Kalgoorlie, teams will trial their skills in a weekend competition across a range of emergency scenarios – search and rescue, fire fighting, breathing apparatus skills, rope rescue, first aid, team skills, an incident management scenario and a theory assessment.

“The Underground Mine Emergency Response Competition provides teams and individuals with the opportunity to refine their emergency response skills and gain valuable knowledge from the feedback given during the scenarios”, CME Director Nicole Roocke said

“These competitions are a great team building exercise where both teams and individuals can demonstrate their expertise and professionalism”, Ms Roocke said.

“Of course, everyone hopes the teams will never have to use the techniques being assessed at the competition, but it gives the teams and their employers confidence that any on-site incident can be well managed.”
