Recognising the Power of Diversity in Resources

Nominations are now open for the 2015 Women in Resources Awards, proudly presented by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME).

“There are many women, men and companies who are achieving great things in the sector to champion diversity and we want to celebrate and share their success,” said CME Chief Executive, Reg Howard-Smith.

CME encourages all WA resources sector companies to reflect on both outstanding staff members and an innovative initiative their company has developed and the impact they have made to help encourage the participation of women in the sector.

“It’s also an opportunity for companies to promote the innovative programs they have been implemented which are attracting and retaining more women to their projects,” said Mr Howard-Smith.

Over the last five years the number of women employed in the resources sector has remained fairly steady at 19 per cent.  CME expects to see an increase in women employed as the sector continues to transition from construction through to production.

Since the inaugural WIRA in 2010, the Awards have become one of CME most successful initiatives.

“Now in its sixth year, the Awards are a great opportunity for the resources sector to come together to celebrate and recognise those working to build a world-class and diverse industry,” said Mr Howard-Smith.

CME looks forward to receiving nominations for female employees who are making a positive impact in the resources sector as well as male employees who are leading the way in championing women in the resources sector.

The 2015 categories are:

  • Women in Resources Champion – recognises and awards an individual, male or female, who has encouraged and advocated for the attraction, retention and promotion of women.
  • Outstanding Woman in Resources – recognises an outstanding woman’s achievements in her career, leadership skills in the resources sector and her resilience in seeking out and accepting new challenges.
