Resourceful Mind project hits major milestone

The mental health peer support program Resourceful Mind – undertaken in partnership with LifelineWA – is now ready to be rolled out more widely after the release of research from Edith Cowan University showing it was both fit-for-purpose and safe for participants.

The program was run as a pilot by CME member companies Roy Hill, Mineral Resources, Woodside and Simcoa over a six-month period in 2021 and the research shows “the program does not negatively impact the psychological health” of peer supporters (or Minders, as they are called in the program).

Minders were measured for the general health (remained good), self-esteem (stayed at normal levels) and burnout (low).

CME thanks the companies involved in the pilot program and Lifeline WA for their ongoing support. We are also very grateful for the freshly-announced $700,000 commitment over four years by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston as part of the WA Government’s Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety (MARS) Program.

This funding will assist greatly with the wider rollout of Resourceful Mind.

Introduction of new Industry Alcohol Guideline

CME is pleased to have established an Industry Alcohol Guideline based on guidance material provided by independent experts 360Edge through the Safe and Respectful Behaviours (SARB) Working Group.

The consumption and availability of alcohol in worksite accommodation have been a recurring theme in both media coverage and oral sessions of the Parliamentary Inquiry Into Sexual Harassment Against Women In The FIFO Mining Industry. The WHS Committee tasked the SARB Working Group with developing the Guideline in 2021, following discussions on alcohol management at the March 2021 WHS Committee meeting. The SARB Working Group completed the Guideline, which was approved by CME’s Advisory Board in early May.

The endorsement of the Industry Guideline does not obligate all CME members to match each element of it immediately – however, it does offer an evidence-based and industry-wide standard. Companies should review and apply each based on their individual operating circumstances and risk profile to ensure safe and inclusive accommodation facilities.  We’re happy to share the guideline and the research behind it with anyone in the broader sector who is interested in learning more
