Out and about and engaging in the South West

CME Regional Officer Jason Mennell spent much of April out and about touching base with member companies in the South West.

The site visits and in-person catch-ups underlined the diversity within the region’s resources sector.

A tour of Simcoa’s operations at Kemerton provided valuable insight into Australia’s only commercial silicon producer.  Silicon’s importance was highlighted when it was added to the Federal Government’s critical minerals list in March as part of its 2022 Critical Minerals Strategy.

Simcoa Vice President Site Services and Marketing, David Miles.

Other site visits included Premier Coal’s mine in Collie (pictured top of this article), which is vital to WA’s power generation and the local economy with a residential workforce of more than 400.

Time was also spent with Hexion (resin, synthetic rubber, and artificial and synthetic fibres), Tronox (titanium dioxide and inorganic chemicals) and South32 (alumina).

Jason is looking forward to learning more about CME’s other member companies boasting a variety of commodities ranging from mineral sands to future-facing battery metals, including lithium.
