Goldfields members come together for a good cause…and game!

It takes a special occasion for the resources industry to come together and what better reason, than a bit of friendly rivalry through a local football carnival.

Footy and mining are synonymous with the Goldfields, where both are steeped in history. It’s a place where teams come together, different skills are showcased and there’s an opportunity to show off to your rivals.

An initiative born from friendly competition between two local sites to raise a few dollars for charity has now grown to a round robin carnival with six teams and for the first time, students from the WA School of Mines joining the cause. This Saturday’s Kalgoorlie Masters Mining Carnival will definitely be something to behold!

Over the past five years, multiple local charities have been supported and this year is no exception. Miner’s Promise is the beneficiary of WASM’s fundraising efforts to the tune of $20,000. Other local charities to benefit from this year’s carnival include the Goldfields Women’s Health Care Centre and the Goldfields Women’s Refuge.

The carnival celebrates people with all skills and backgrounds, with teams made up of mining industry staff – male and female, from superstar regional players, to ex-AFL players, young guns and oldies. It’s all a bit of fun and the trophy for the carnival winner sits very proudly with the winning company.

Coordinated by the Masters’ Football Club, President Brodie Clynk said this was a great way to celebrate mateship and really showed the spirit and generosity of the resources industry and people in the Goldfields.

CME is eager to support the initiative by sponsoring a coffee van to keep the players and supporters suitably caffeinated throughout the day.

The fact that this initiative grows every year and is purely run by volunteers is a testament to the staff and companies that continue to come together to support local charities.

It is clear the Goldfields is at the forefront of a resources boom. And there’s nothing more visible for the positive trajectory of the industry than the buzz of the annual Diggers & Dealers conference.

Starting on Monday, this year’s program boasts a keynote address by internationally renowned U.S economist Dr Dambisa Moyo, among many others. We can expect thousands of visitors to our city from all over the world, with Kalgoorlie rightly taking its place at the centre of global and Australian mining and resources activity.

We welcome all delegates and encourage visiting members to come along to our flagship Kalgoorlie office and have a coffee, courtesy of the Goldfields team. We look forward to robust discussions about what the future of the resources industry holds.
