Forest Management Plan consultation starts

The Department of Biodiversity Conservation & Attractions (DBCA), through the Conservation and Parks Commission, has commenced consultation on the Forest Management Plan (FMP) 2024 to 2033.  The FMP is the key policy framework for protecting and managing the forests of the South West. The FMP 2024 – 2033 will reflect the impact of a drying and warming climate in the South West and the McGowan government announcement that native logging will cease in 2024.  From 2024, timber taken from South West forests will be limited to management activities that improve forest health and clearing for approved mining operations.

Mining focus group sessions were held on 26 and 28 of April 2022 and were attended by representatives from CME and some member organisations.  DBCA will release the draft plan for consultation in Q4 2022.  More information on the FMP can be accessed here

Carbon Capture Usage and Storage method development

In October 2021, the Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, the Hon. Angus Taylor MP, announced the development of a Carbon Capture Usage and Storage (CCUS) method was a priority for 2022.  The Clean Energy Regulator (CER) conducted the first CCUS Method Scoping Co-design Workshop on 18 March 2022.  They advised the CCUS method development will build on the existing CCS method, varying it to allow for carbon capture and provide opportunities to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). The CCUS method will be developed over 12 months using a co-design process with a February 2023 target completion date.

CER proposes to include mineral carbonation, concrete and polymer manufacture in the method.  They are looking for industry feedback on:

  1. Other applications that could be included in the method, including confirmatory evidence of long term carbon storage
  1. How abatement would be calculated
  1. Interaction with safeguard baseline.

If you wish to participate in the development of this method please contact the CER Method Development inbox: methoddevelopment@cer.gov.au
