Consultation on Mining Amendment Bill commences

Consultation on the second 2021 Bill amending the Mining Act 1978 (WA) was announced in early January 2022. A consultation draft is now available online, with this Bill looking to address known technical resource tenure amendments, including:

  • updates required for the Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020)
  • provisions for excision of land ‘unavailable for exploration’ from exploration licence applications at the discretion of the Minister.
  • provisions for conversion applications to be made without first marking out the land due to impacts of a significant event preventing marking out.

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) have published a one-page consultation summary of these amendments and will be holding an information session on Friday 11 February.

If you would like to attend, further details and an email to register with are on the DMIRS consultation hub page. CME will be attending and will provide an update to members of any further information that is provided.

Consultation on these amendments is scheduled to close on Friday 11 March. CME plans to provide a submission.

2022 CME committee and working group nominations

The 2022 schedule is already full with legislative amendments and ongoing reforms across the land access, exploration and environment portfolios. The membership of committees and working groups is critical for CME in developing submissions and contributing to effective advocacy.

As we prepare for the first committee meetings of the year, members are invited to nominate or review their membership across all relevant CME committees to ensure they are adequately represented and contributing to important discussions.

Please get in touch with Roannah Wade (R.Wade@cmewa.com) if you would like to discuss or nominate.
