CME prepares for introduction of modern Aboriginal cultural heritage legislation

The March 2021 re-election of the McGowan Labor Government and appointment of Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC as Minister for Aboriginal Affairs has paved the way for the progress of long-awaited Aboriginal cultural heritage legislation this year.

CME made a detailed submission to final phase consultation on a draft Bill late last year, outlining amendments required to deliver workable legislation. As progress ramps up on the Bill, CME looks forward to working collaboratively with the Minister and his office to deliver modernised legislation which operates effectively for all stakeholders.

Consultation with members in preparation for introduction of a Bill into Parliament, and throughout the parliamentary process, will be coordinated through CME’s Native Title and Aboriginal Heritage Working Group. CME will also continue to reach out to individual members to discuss specific concerns and changes.

CME encourages any members who would like to discuss the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Bill, be included in communications relating to Aboriginal heritage and any related concerns to get in touch.
