CME forms Safe and Respectful Behaviours Working Group

CME’s Advisory Board and Executive Council has proposed to immediately form a cross-portfolio Safe and Respectful Behaviours (SARB) Working Group. Among the initiatives the working group will focus on:

  • A code of conduct for employees of member companies –  focused on behaviour at external events, after hours on site and, and social media activities. This will include considerations for contractors and third parties.
  • Implementation of a wide range of safety controls for the sector – including prevention of unacceptable behaviour, best practice risk mitigation and considerations of how operations respond to allegations and instances of unacceptable behaviour.

CME is currently calling for nominations from members for representatives on SARB and are encouraged to nominate representatives from different functions (WHS, Human Resources, Diversity and Inclusion) to ensure a holistic and collaborative approach.

Members interested in remaining across the progress of this or wishing to nominate an employee to SARB are to reach out to L.Nowell@cmewa.com.

New CME Diversity and Inclusion Senior Adviser

CME is committed to playing a leading role in championing diversity and inclusion in the sector. As part of our ongoing effort to sustain meaningful change, we have recently welcomed Senior Adviser Diversity and Inclusion Eliza Torres.

Eliza brings with her more than eight years of experience in the mining and resources industry and broad experience across a number of people and culture roles. Eliza has a keen interest in data-driven insights to support measurable, impactful change and is looking forward to engaging with members on the biennial Diversity in the Western Australian Resources Sector Report. Eliza has been working closely with the Workplace Health and Safety team in support of a cohesive and timely response to recent media reporting about the treatment of women within the industry. The Diversity and Inclusion Reference Group will be reconvened in the coming weeks, and, among other initiatives, will support the cross-portfolio efforts of the Safe and Respectful Behaviours Working Group.

WA Mental Health Awards 2021

CME is excited to sponsor the ‘Mentally Healthy Workplace Award’ at the upcoming WA Mental Health Awards 2021. The awards are hosted by the Western Australian Association for Mental Health (WAAMH), with the support of the WA Mental Health Commission. Through our WHS Committees and Mental Health Working Group, CME is able to see firsthand how mental health and wellbeing is a priority for our members. This is a great opportunity for the sector to showcase achievements, and recognise those who have demonstrated excellence, innovation and initiative in supporting mental health.

Nominations are now live. We encourage members who have implemented in-house initiatives that support employee mental health and wellbeing to submit an application. Please note that the nominations close on Friday 25 August and that finalists will be announced during Mental Health Week (9 – 16 October).

SWOSH site visit

South32 hosted the South West Occupational Safety & Health forum (SWOSH) this month. For this meeting, SWOSH continued to trial a new format, including rotating host locations, rotating chairs, and a site tour. South32 provided members with a site introduction and highlighted some safety ‘bright spots’ before a tour of the refinery. SWOSH members were provided with a policy update over lunch, and a presentation from Andrew Chaplyn (Director Mines Safey & State Mining Engineer, Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety).
