INFRASTRUCTURE & ECONOMICS

Within the Infrastructure and Economics Portfolio CME is focused on the following strategies to deliver the industry's vision:
  • Infrastructure and Planning – An industry-government infrastructure plan for state and regional development
  • Infrastructure and Planning – Coordination between the responsibilities of government, industry and community in the provisions of social and physical infrastructure
  • Infrastructure and Planning – Legislation is enacted which formalises risk management principles
  • Infrastructure and Planning – Government processes are streamlined, transparent and simplified, reducing regulatory burden
  • Infrastructure and Planning – Highly competent and responsive government agencies
  • Infrastructure and Planning – Government policy increases the attractiveness of WA as a destination for investment
  • Communities – Social infrastructure provided by government, supported by industry
  • Innovation – A Government framework that facilitates investment in innovation
  • Innovation- Industry wide commitment to shared research and development collaboration
  • Natural Resources - The WA energy market promotes efficient energy generation and distribution
  • Natural Resources - Energy policy ensures security of supply
  • Natural Resources - The WA water regulatory framework supports industry generation of water for community use 

Projects and Issues

Following is a list of the 6 key projects being developed by the Infrastructure and Economics Committee:
  1. Advocacy for a State Vision, based on CME's State Framework for Growth. This study identifies gaps in the three defined growth enablers – water, people and energy and provides a valued input into industry and government planning for the future.
  2. Development of an advocacy document to promote the need for a State Energy Policy. The objective is to clarify the State's vision for the total energy solution for the future needs of the state.
  3. Development of an advocacy document on water demand and management in the resources sector to encourage improved management of the State's water resources.
  4. Through the CME Regional Council's, undertake Regional Infrastructure Gap Analysis as the basis for future advocacy on Regional Infrastructure funding.
  5. Advocacy on the Resources Industry contribution the State and Regional Economies including analysis of the impact of Government fees and charges and cost of regulation on industry.
  6. Through the CME Climate Change Reference Group, continue to advocate for a market based, internationally aligned response to Climate Change supported by investment in technology.

Committee

The Infrastructure and Economics Standing Committee is tasked with leading policy development on Infrastructure and Economic issues impacting the resources sector.

The Committee is Chaired by Julius Matthys of BHP Billiton Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd.
