30/08/10
The achievements of companies within the resource sector have featured at this year’s WA Training Awards.
Rio Tinto and Chevron Australia were among the winners at Friday night’s awards ceremony.
Rio Tinto Iron Ore won the Best Training Initiative in Western Australia, sponsored by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME).
The company’s Advanced Skills Development Initiative was recognised for the way it identified and defined the specific skills required, to allow its workers to carry out their tasks safely and efficiently.
Chevron Australia was declared the 2010 Employer of the Year, sponsored by the Australian Institute of Management.
Chevron was recognised for taking an integrated and long-term view of talent development and its inclusive and supportive approach to ensuring diversity in the workplace.
Chevron’s current workforce is expected to access more than 1000 training courses across all professional disciplines in 2010, as the company gears up for significant growth on the back of WA resource projects.
“WA’s resource sector is a major employer of Western Australians,” CME Chief Executive Reg Howard-Smith said.
“As reflected by the efforts of Rio Tinto and Chevron, the industry’s commitment ongoing training and opportunities are second to none.”
Emerson Lievense was announced the 2010 WA Apprentice of the Year. Emerson was employed by the Energy Apprenticeship Group and hosted by Woodside.
Emerson hasn’t looked back, since deciding an apprenticeship in electrical instrumentation was the best way to get practical experience in the oil and gas industry.
The WA Training Awards recognise and reward outstanding achievements of apprentices, trainees and vocational students, and the contribution to training made by trainers, training organisations and employers.
In their sixteenth year, the awards continue to celebrate WA’s training elite, providing a benchmark across all industries.
This year there were 13 categories in the WA Training Awards; five student categories, one trainer category and seven organisational categories.
Winners at the WA Training Awards may be eligible to represent the State at the Australian Training Awards in Sydney on 19 November 2010.
