Institute Strengthens Sector Ties With Academia

03/09/10
Today’s launch of the Unversity of Western Australia’s Energy and Minerals Institute has been welcomed by the state’s peak resources body.

Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME) Chief Executive Reg Howard-Smith said the institute would play an important role in researching solutions to challenges confronting the sector in the 21st century.

“Whether it’s in the area of exploration, production or business policy, we see the institute as providing an important link between academia and government, industry and business,” Mr Howard-Smith said.

“The intellectual leadership and innovative research provided by the institute will be a boost for the sector – it’s recognition of the significant role the industry will play in securing long-term prosperity for WA, and the importance of retaining our international competitiveness.”

The institute’s board will include representation from CME member companies, including Rio Tinto Iron Ore Chief Executive Sam Walsh, Shell Australia Country Chairwoman Ann Pickard and BHP Billiton Stainless Steel Materials President Glenn Kellow.

Institute Director Tim Shanahan is a former head of the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia.
