Families in Need the Focus of Miners Promise
29/07/10
Today’s launch of a legacy scheme, aimed at supporting families confronted by the death or permanent injury of a loved one employed in the WA resource sector, has been welcomed by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME).
Miners’ Promise is a non-profit scheme, which will deliver financial and legal support, education development and property services to WA families – it will cost members just $4 a week.
CME Chief Executive Reg Howard-Smith said there was currently no existing independent support service for families of workers who were killed or permanently injured, while employed in the WA sector.
“The scheme was developed on the ethos of mining people looking after mining people,” Mr Howard-Smith said.
“Four dollars a week is a very small investment, for the peace of mind Miners’ Promise will deliver to tens of thousands of WA families.”
Employees of participating employers are eligible to apply. More information is available at www.minerspromise.org.au.
Meanwhile, plans are underway to create a public monument, to celebrate the sector’s contribution to WA and honour those who have lost their lives working in the industry.
The Miners’ Tribute Working Group has a $700,000 fundraising target for the project.
