Truck Driver

Truck drivers use heavy vehicles to transport goods and materials from one area to another. Truck drivers in the minerals industry may perform the following tasks:

  • check brakes, oil, tyres, electrical systems,water, hydraulic and air;
  • load, or supervise loading, of material onto the truck;
  • transport material to destination;
  • maintain log book.

NT
There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Drivers must obtain an appropriate driving licence which includes a practical and written (or oral) test from the Motor Vehicle Registry. The different licences (as required by legislation) for various sized vehicles are as follows:

CLASS A - Persons may drive non articulated trucks not exceeding 4.5 tonnes.

CLASS C - This class has five categories of licence covering non-articulated and articulated vehicles exceeding 4.5 tonnes. This licence is necessary for drivers of vehicles such as tray tops, semi-trailers, low loaders and road trains which are used in heavy haulage work, particularly over long distances.

Practical experience and training needed in order to obtain a suitable driving licence may be gained by attending formal training at the Transport Industries Training Advisory Board (NT) Inc. The course is recognised nationally by the freighting industry.

An authorisation from the Work Health Authority is required for carrying over 400 kg of dangerous goods and the vehicle must be licensed accordingly.
