Shot Firer

Shot firers assemble, position and detonate explosives to break or dislodge rock and soil. Shot firers in the minerals industry may perform the following tasks:

  • inspect blast areas to ensure safety regulations are observed;
  • decide on quantity of explosives required;
  • insert detonators and charge into holes;
  • connect blasting circuit and test or inspect it;
  • fire charges;
  • inspect area to ensure all charges have detonated;
  • declare site safe;
  • check site safety after blasting eg loose rock hazards, mine roof supports.

There are no specific educational requirements for entry into this occupation.

There is no course available in the Northern Territory. Mining companies may have their own training available. When training is completed you will be issued with a shot-firer's licence from Work Health Authority.
