Open Cut Mining Plant Operator

Open cut mining plant operators use equipment to excavate and load ore in open-cut mine workings. Open cut mining plant operators may perform the following tasks:

  • start and stop equipment and check its performance;
  • maintain fuel or power supplies to equipment;
  • report any mechanical problems;
  • complete log sheets for each shift;
  • operate or drive equipment by using electronic controls, sensors, and TV monitors to move ore;
  • advise service personnel of any maintenance requirements.

Education and Training:

NT
There is no particular level of education required for this job, although it is essential that you can read, write and speak English well, as 2-way radios may be used and some minor clerical work may be involved. If you are interested in this work you should hold a current driver's licence, preferably endorsed for 'A', 'B' and 'C' classes. Some training qualifications may help you gain work in this field.

Operators may begin their employment performing labouring duties, until their aptitude for machine operating has been assessed. Training is given on the job and people may progress to higher grades of operators by attaining experience and other licences.

There are no courses offered in the Northern Territory for Open-Cut Mining Plant Operators.
