Metal Machinist

Metal machinists set up and operate tools to cut, shape and form metal stock and castings to exact size, using detailed drawings and specifications. Metal machinists in the minerals industry may perform the following tasks:

  • study blueprints and drawings to decide which machines and tools are needed;
  • mark guidelines for machining metal;
  • select tools for the task;
  • adjust guides to ensure correct positioning;
  • operate machines to make articles by turning, boring, milling, planing, shaping, slotting, grinding or drilling stock;
  • maintain machines;
  • maintain and sharpen cutting tools.
