CMEWA Inc - Women in Resources

WOMEN IN RESOURCES

The WA resource sector has seen a gradual increase in the number of females in their workforces, with current figures ranging from 10% to 28%. The average is 18% and this figure is well below the National average of 45%. This highlights that the participation rate of women in the resource sector is significantly lower than men, particularly in non-traditional positions.

The resource sector can provide women with initiatives, diverse career (traditional and non-traditional), and employment opportunities, from land-based or off-shore fly-in, fly-out; drive-in, drive-out; remote residential and metropolitan living.

The resources sector will require a skilled workforce to deliver the significant number of projects currently in planning and development. It has been predicted that by 2013, labour demands will result in an estimated 38,000 additional employees being required by the minerals and energy sector, with shortages expected to impact business sustainability.

With this information, and the prediction of skills shortages over the next year and beyond, CME recognises the need to encourage more women to explore the many interesting and rewarding careers available within the mining and energy sectors.
